As a teacher, Avery found immense joy in seeing the humor and play that students explored in their writing. Through creative writing, creating comic strips, writing personal narratives, creating podcasts, and tabletop role-playing games, her students connect with one another, explore how world building influences plot, develop effective communication skills, and continuously learn and grow. Avery seeks to implement multimodal ways in the writing classroom that generates imagination and personal development in her students that will spread to the community as a whole.

Avery currently lives in Scottsbluff, Nebraska where she seeks to connect the community and its students to other schools and (sub)urban communities within the state through writing activities, community building, and teaching. She does this through her connections with other teachers, mentors, community members, students, and NeWP members.
