As a young teacher, Shelby was shaped by the Nebraska Writing Project. From finding her voice as a teacher at the Summer Institute in 2016 to inspiring her students to use writing to engage in civic responsibilities through the Husker Writing Program, she feels that her approach to writing has changed completely: “Before the Nebraska Writing Project, I never saw writing as a chance for students to learn how to advocate, and now I really see writing as a chance to write to senators or create meaningful op-eds. The Nebraska Writing Project helped me see that my voice is what I have and my writing is something I have to share my voice. That goes for my students as well. It’s important for them to see that just because they’re young, it doesn’t mean they don’t have anything to say. Teaching them how to write gives them the power to express themselves in a sophisticated way. They can advocate, share their stories, and help others share theirs. With the help of the Nebraska Writing Project, I now view teaching writing to students as the way to start helping them find their voice and use it in incredible ways.”
